| HISTORY | |
The Department of Philosophy, one of the youngest departments in the faculty of Arts, was established in the 1974/75 session. It began with late Prof. P.O. Bodunrin (then Dr. P.O. Bodunrin) as the first head of department. The department started with a set of sixteen students (10 single honors and 6 combined honors). Despite the fact that the department was established at a time when Philosophy as an academic discipline was relatively new in the country, it has grown to become the largest in the Faculty of Arts.
During the 1996/97 academic session a total of 250 students were registered at the 100 level.
The number of academic staff has been increasing since the department came into existence in 1974. Now there are 11 academic staff in the department (1 Professor, 5 Senior Lecturers and 5 Lecturers).
The degree programme of the department from inception has been designed in a comprehensive manner such that Philosophy graduates can easily fit into any career they may choose. The single honours programme is designed for specialists who mayor may not wish to embark upon post-graduate studies in philosophy. The department also runs combined degree programmes with the following departments: Classics, English, History, Mathematics, Political Science and Religious Studies. We also offer elective/compulsory courses for students from the various faculties in the University, especially Faculties of Agriculture, Social Science and Law.
The department began the post-graduate programme in 1978 and has graduated several students at the Master and Doctoral levels. The one calendar year M.A. degree programme in Philosophy is designed to enable students do more intensive work in the principal areas of philosophy than is possible at the undergraduate level. It is also designed to familiarize students with and train them in the more contemporary areas
and methods of philosophy
